Trip Highlights
What This Journey Typically Costs
Because every Rwanda and Kenya safari we design is fully custom, pricing varies based on travel dates, lodge category, internal flights, and permit availability for gorilla trekking.
As a general guideline
This itinerary is most influenced by the gorilla permit, Rwanda lodge category, and the caliber of camp and guiding in the Masai Mara. Seasonal demand also impacts pricing, especially during June through September and December through February.
Quotes typically include accommodations, meals on safari, scheduled flights listed in the itinerary, private transfers where applicable, guided activities included in the program, and required park fees. International airfare is generally quoted separately.
We will walk you through the options transparently and recommend what makes the most sense for your trip.

Kigali City Tour and Into the Savannah
This morning begins with a guided introduction to Kigali, a capital that feels strikingly modern yet deeply rooted in the country's recent history. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial for important context, then continue through local neighborhoods and markets for a more immediate sense of daily life. After lunch, leave the city behind and drive east toward Akagera National Park. The scenery gradually opens from cultivated hillsides to broad savannah and wetland landscapes. Game Drives and Lake Ihema Boat Safari
Wake early for a morning game drive through Akagera's varied terrain of open plains, acacia woodland, and low wetlands. This is Rwanda's classic safari landscape, where elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and a wide range of plains game move through a surprisingly beautiful and uncrowded setting. Later in the day, trade the safari vehicle for a boat on Lake Ihema. Cruising quietly along the shoreline offers a completely different perspective on the park, with hippos crowding the water, crocodiles stretched along the banks, and birdlife constantly in motion overhead.
Highlights
- Morning game drive
- Classic savannah wildlife viewing
- Lake Ihema boat safari

Into Rwanda's Rainforest
Travel south through Rwanda's endlessly green countryside toward Nyungwe Forest National Park. The drive itself is one of the pleasures of the country, passing tea fields, terraced hillsides, and small communities tucked into the landscape. Along the way, make selected cultural and historical stops before continuing into the rainforest region. By late afternoon, arrive at your lodge near Nyungwe, where cool forest air and sweeping views mark a complete shift in atmosphere from the savannah.
Highlights
- Scenic drive through rural Rwanda
- Tea country and terraced hills
- Cultural stops en route

Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
Rise early and head into Nyungwe with expert trackers in search of chimpanzees. The forest here feels dense, dramatic, and alive, and sightings can be energetic and exhilarating as chimps move quickly through the trees. Later, experience the forest from a different angle on Nyungwe's canopy walkway, suspended high above the ground with wide views over the treetops and surrounding mountains. It is one of the most visually striking rainforest experiences in East Africa.
Highlights
- Chimpanzee trekking
- Guided rainforest tracking
- Nyungwe canopy walk

Transfer to Lake Kivu
Continue north toward Lake Kivu, where Rwanda's dramatic hills fall away to one of Africa's Great Lakes. The route hugs the lakeshore in places, revealing a softer, more tranquil side of the country. Arrive with time to settle into your lakeside setting and enjoy the change of pace. This is a scenic pause built into the itinerary, giving the journey room to breathe before the excitement of the Volcanoes region.
Highlights
- Lake Kivu transfer
- Scenic shoreline landscapes
- Lakeside lodge stay

Toward the Virunga Volcanoes
After a relaxed morning, continue north toward Volcanoes National Park. - First views of the Virunga volcanoes
- Lodge check-in in the Volcanoes region

Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Today is the defining moment of the Rwanda journey. After an early breakfast, transfer to park headquarters for briefing before setting out with your guides and trackers. The trek moves from farmland into dense forest on the slopes of the Virungas, with the route and duration shaped by the location of your assigned gorilla family. When you finally come upon the gorillas, the effect is immediate and unforgettable. You will spend one extraordinary hour observing them at close range before returning to the lodge.

Golden Monkey Trekking or Leisure
This morning offers the chance to track golden monkeys in the bamboo forest at the base of the volcanoes. For those who prefer a slower pace, the day can remain flexible, with time to relax at the lodge or arrange a nearby community visit.
Highlights
- Golden monkey trekking
- Bamboo forest landscapes
- Flexible time in the Volcanoes region

- Big cat tracking
- Flexible safari pacing

Hot Air Balloon Safari and Game Drives
Begin before sunrise with the option to float above the Mara in a hot air balloon, one of East Africa's most iconic safari experiences. - Bush breakfast in the Mara
- Full day of game drives

Final Full Day in the Mara
A final full day in the Mara allows for deeper exploration without rushing.
