Tucked away on the east coast of South America, sandwiched between Brazil & Argentina, Uruguay is a small country of only 3.3 million people. Although it has some of the finest beaches in the region, some of Latin America’s most attractive colonial towns, and a nightlife rivaling big cities across the globe, Uruguay has only recently emerged on the tourist radar, with a huge surge in visitors over the last decade. A stable, progressive and safe country, Uruguay’s treasures are now an attraction for those looking to avoid the throngs of tourists.

Head to Punta del Este and the coast for beaches that rival any in South America, chic hotels, and wildlife sightings like whales, penguins & sea lions! Up the coast, visitors can find stunning lagoons such as Laguna Garzón & Laguna de Rocha, both havens for birdlife.

Montevideo is the cultural heartland of the country, a place where you will discover the bold accomplishments of Uruguay in music, art, and literature. Less visited than its cosmopolitan cousin down the river in Buenos Aires, the city’s dining scene has exploded and continues to do so. Meat lovers are certainly in for a treat, as the beef in Uruguay is considered second-to-none.

For a slower pace of life, the interior of the country is stunning in its own right. Colonial towns, hot springs, and haciendas, where time seems to have stood still with gauchos working on their day-to-day tasks, and where visitors can partake in sheep shearing or horseback riding.

The peaceful cobbled streets of Colonia are just over the Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires, (making it a fantastic option to include on a multi-country trip), but they seem a world away. The historic quarter Colonia del Sacramento rewards those who make the trip with colorful facades set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is the type of laid back place where one simply wanders around, lost in time.
